Inheritance #5
Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe (The Lunch on the Grass)
Édouard Manet
1862–1863
This pivotal work signaled the birth of modern art by breaking both stylistic and social conventions of the 19th century. By placing a nude woman in a contemporary setting alongside clothed men, Manet shocked the Parisian public and challenged the traditional "idealized" nude of classical mythology. His use of flat lighting and visible brushstrokes moved away from academic realism, paving the way for the Impressionist movement.
