Inheritance #7
Judith and Her Maidservant with the Head of Holofernes
Artemisia Gentileschi
1623–1625

A cornerstone of Italian Baroque drama, this painting captures the tense moment after the decapitation of the Assyrian general Holofernes. Gentileschi masterfully employs tenebrism—the use of intense shadows and a single, candle-lit focal point—to heighten the psychological suspense. Unlike many contemporary depictions of this theme, Artemisia emphasizes the solidarity and calculated bravery of the two women as they prepare their escape.
