Inheritance #12
The Rape of the Daughters of Leucippus
Peter Paul Rubens and Jan Wildens
c. 1618
This masterpiece of Flemish Baroque art is renowned for its explosive energy and complex, interlocking composition. The scene depicts the mythological abduction of Phoebe and Hilaeira by the twins Castor and Pollux. Rubens utilizes a double-axis arrangement to create a sense of perpetual motion, while the collaboration with Jan Wildens—who specialized in the landscape background—exemplifies the highly organized workshop system of the 17th century.
