Ayusi Sweeping Bandits with a Lance
Giuseppe Castiglione (Lang Shining)
1755

This work is a classic example of the hybrid style pioneered by Giuseppe Castiglione, an Italian Jesuit missionary who became a favored court painter for the Qing Dynasty. Combining European techniques of chiaroscuro and three-dimensional realism with traditional Chinese materials, the painting depicts Ayusi, a Dzungar officer who became a legendary warrior for Emperor Qianlong. The dynamic sense of motion in the galloping horse and the precise detail of the weaponry reflect the Qing court's desire to document military achievements through a fusion of Eastern and Western artistic perspectives.
